1.What increases the risks associated with pregnancy?

Several factors can increase the risk associated with a pregnancy some of these include as – diabetes, high blood pressure, seizures, and/or other illnesses. Any previous pregnancies and births that gave rise to complications could mean that the current or subsequent pregnancy could be a risky one. In many cases, underlying health conditions – either pre-existing or acquired during the course of the pregnancy are the primary causes of increasing risk associated with pregnancy.

2.How does Ankura Hospital manage high risk pregnancies?

Given that high risk pregnancies require constant monitoring of vital signs, regular check-up and adherence to strict routine, we have an experienced team of obstetricians, intensivists, anaesthetists and neonatologists alongside a fully functional, state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit that provide acute critical care to pre-term and under-weight babies. Babies born with critical malfunctions and/or deformities are given the highest care possible to ensure they are able to sustain themselves.

3.Are twins, triplets always result in high risk pregnancies?

No, as a general rule of thumb there is no reason to believe so. However, with the increasing number of foetuses the associated risk can be higher. Also, multiple foetuses mean there is additional strain on the mother, which can subsequently increase the risk associated with the pregnancy.

4.What precautions can be taken to prevent or reduce high risk pregnancies?

Given that some of the risks associated with pregnancy are due to health conditions that develop during the course of the pregnancy, it is important to keep your weight under control, eat healthy and have an active healthy & lifestyle. Regular pregnancy checks and scans, discussions with your gynaecologist also help you keep your risk profile low.
