Menopausal Management

Menopause is the natural and permanent end to the menstrual cycles of a women typically in her later 40’s. Often menopause is defined as the state post 12-months of a women’s last menstrual period. This is not just a biological process, but also an emotional and mental one as lot of women undergo stress, anxiety, hormonal changes etc., during this time. 1.What are the symptoms associated with menopause?

Menopause is defined to have set in 12-months from the women’s last menstrual cycle. Some of the common signs associated with the onset of menopause would include - hot flashes and vaginal dryness. This is accompanied by lack of sexual drive, possible sleep disturbances and emotional changes such as anxiety or depression.

Hormonal imbalances can also occur during this period which may give rise to other physiological or psychological conditions.

2.What causes menopause?

While menopause is a natural and normal course of a women’s reproductive life, in certain cases there may be an onset of early menopause based on the women’s health and other factors. Some of these include:

Hormonal imbalances

Undergoing a hysterectomy procedure

As a side-effect of chemotherapy

Underlying insufficiency of ovaries

3.What are the complications associated with menopause?

Menopause can result in hormonal imbalances and emotional distress in a woman. In addition to these, it is quite possible that the menopausal phase will be accompanied by several health-related conditions & complications. Some of these include:

Heart conditions due to the declining oestrogen levels

Osteoporosis caused by the weakening of the bones

Urinary incontinence and urinary tract infections

Possible weight gain, due to slowing down of metabolism

Reduced sexual desire due to vaginal dryness

Post-menopausal bleeding
