The final stage of a pregnancy term is labour when the child descends down into the birth canal and is ready to step out into the world. Pain experienced by women at the time of delivery is the most excruciating but the advent of modern medicine & techniques has now made it possible for pain relief during labour & delivery. Thus, painless deliveries now make it possible for them to have a more comfortable birthing experience and thereby make labour easier to deal with it.

Epidurals are pain-killing injections in the lower back which reduces pain during delivery. The drug is safe for the baby, while allowing the mother to have a pain-free delivery and childbirth.

1.Who can have an epidural?

All women undergoing labour can take an epidural. However, exception is made in the case of those on blood thinning drugs. The guiding principle being that while painless deliveries are desirable, but the safety of the mother and the baby are of fundamental concern. The injection numbs the nerves and alleviates pains. However, this numbing sensation does not affect the ability to move. The drugs do not have any bearing on the health of the baby.

2.Why is an epidural prescribed?

An epidural is the best form of pain relief during delivery, it helps the mother relax, deal with exhaustion & provide strength.

3.How effective is an epidural?

An epidural is the best form of pain relief during delivery; however, the mother will feel the contractions & discomfort.

4.Does an epidural fail?

Yes, there is a chance. However, your doctor might add additional dosage. Also, there could be some small side effects of an epidural.
